New Year Rx: Making
Life Easier and More Comfortable

We all make to-do lists for the New Year to make sure we get off to the right start (out with the old and in with the new). A typical list might include starting a diet and exercise program, or organizing closets and files. This is also the perfect time to do an information “check-up” with key care and service providers. Belmont Village offers the following suggestions to our residents and families for a happy new year:

1. Keep us informed. If any contact information has changed during the past 12 months, be sure to let us know. This could be very important in case of emergency. Also check other records that pertain to your loved one. For example, have you brought additional items that should be added to the list of personal possessions?

2. Little black book. If your family member has an address book, make sure you update it. Also reprogram the telephone for your loved one if they rely on it.

3. The doctor will see you now.
It’s also a good idea to update information with any physicians or other outside services that may need to contact you.

4. You look marvelous. Frequent washing of clothing can cause holes and spills can result in stains. Take a look in the closet and drawers to ensure nothing needs to be replaced or repaired.

5. Baby, it’s cold(er) outside. With cold weather, some residents will want heavier pants and tops. A warm sweater and thick socks are always a comfort. A blanket for the bed or a throw for the chair would also be nice. And don’t forget that being inside with a heater can cause chapped hands and lips. If this is the case for your loved one, a trip to the drug store for hand lotion and lip balm may be in order.

6. My, how they’ve grown. Everyone loves photographs of their family. If you have cute holiday photos (and who doesn’t) have some prints made while you’re at the drug store. Or if there is a budding artist in your family, original artwork (of any quality) by a grandchild can always brighten a room.

7. Sharp as a tack. Research has proven that reading, working crossword puzzles or keeping our minds active in other ways can help us cognitively. The next time you visit, how about taking along a book or puzzle that your family member would enjoy in addition to their group activities at Belmont.

8. Last, but not least. As we get older, our eyes get weaker. So when you’re looking for a book or puzzle for your family member, check out the large print versions.

These are just a few suggestions intended to help you make your family member more comfortable. If you have other suggestions, please let us know. We’re always happy to hear from family members and share information with others.
