Honor, Respect, Remember
November 11 is Veteran’s Day, the day that commemorates the end of the “great war” and honors all of the American soldiers who have served since, in wars and conflicts across the globe. World War I ended ninety-one years ago, in a railroad car, in a French forest, near the front lines. The terms of the agreement signed there at 5 a.m. called for an end to the fighting all along the Western front at precisely 11 a.m. So it was that on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the guns fell silent.
World War I was a war unlike any that had been seen before, introducing air warfare and other modern techniques. More than 70 million people fought, and more than 15 million died. It was called the “war to end all wars,” but many servicemen and women have battled since to uphold our freedoms and serve our country. November 11 is the day that has been set aside by our nation to recognize their sacrifices and honor them for their service.
Belmont Village is proud to be home to many of those who have served, in World War II, Korea and beyond, and even prouder to be able to honor them and their service in our communities. A year ago this fall Belmont Village met Thomas Sanders, a remarkable young photographer who was on a mission to captures the images and personal stories of World War II veterans and collect them in a book. We recognized that we could help him in his mission, and in the process, help preserve the stories and histories of our residents who have served. We commissioned Tom for a special portrait project called American Heroes: Portraits of Service.
Since our first meeting, he has photographed hundreds of veterans in Belmont Village communities throughout the country. Their photos now hang in galleries at our communities – each one presenting the unique and compelling stories of our residents.
Private viewings are available by appointment. Exhibit openings are celebrated with a reception for families and the surrounding community. To learn more about this project and upcoming opening events, please click here.
