Salute to NFL great Chuck Weber

You might say Chuck Weber knows his way around the gridiron – he played seven seasons in the NFL, then coached for another twenty-three. These days, he does most of his coaching from the comfort of his armchair at Belmont Village. Fall is still his favorite time of year, and we caught up with him recently as he gears up for the season.
Chuck graduated from Abington High School in Pennsylvania in 1949, and went on to West Chester College. He joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1959 and was the starting middle linebacker in the 1960 NFL Championship game between the Eagles and the Green Bay Packers. “The championship game is my favorite football memory, mostly because we won,” said Weber who still wears the 1960 Championship ring.
Weber also still holds a record for most interceptions in one game. He caught three interceptions on Sept 30, 1960 when the Eagles played the Cowboys - quite a feat for a linebacker. “The Cowboy’s quarterback didn’t like me much,” he says with a laugh. That season he caught a total of six interceptions, which was the team record for many years. Weber has, in fact, won two championship rings.
His most memorable coaching experience was as Defensive Coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals when they played, and won, against the Cleveland Browns.
Today, Weber is a San Diego Chargers fan. Having coached under both Sid Gillman and Don Coryell, he likes what he sees with this year’s team. “They are a young and an exciting team who put on a good show for the fans,” said Weber. “Last year, I especially liked the way Vincent Jackson played.”
In September, Weber has been invited to participate in the 50th Reunion of the winning 1960 Philadelphia Eagles Team. He will travel to Pennsylvania with his daughter and granddaughter, to be featured in a parade and recognized during the half-time show.
