Traditions of the Heart

National Assisted Living Week® (NALW) begins on Grandparents Day, Sept. 13, and ends on Sept. 19. Established in 1995, NALW provides a unique opportunity for residents, families, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding community to come together and show our residents how much we care. This year’s theme is “Traditions of the Heart.” Traditions are a part of each individual’s personal history. Some traditions are common, with small variations from person to person and family to family. Other traditions are more unique, stemming from family events of the past or long forgotten geographically specific superstitions, religions, or climates.

We all have them, and they have influenced who we are and how we live our lives. The passing on of traditions keep us connected with our family and history. Traditional crafts, foods, games, ghost stories and wives’ tales, and music are things to be treasured. Who doesn’t remember sitting down with family members to play a game together, or learning a grandparent’s secret recipe? Remember the special food served to you when you were sick or enjoying a treasured holiday?

Sharing stories and history is what this week is about.  Assisted Living is all about community — caring for and nurturing those who have chosen to make our Assisted and Senior Living communities their homes. We are honored to be able to serve these unique and remarkable men and women who have experienced so much in their lives, and from whom we have much to learn.

Thank you to our Belmont Village residents for sharing your life stories, experience and wisdom.  We are the wiser for having met you.

Thank you also to our partners in senior care services who are dedicated to upholding a high standard of professional and compassionate care for all of our residents.

National Assisted Living Week was established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL).  NCAL is the assisted living voice of the American Health Care Association. For more information, please visit www.ncal.org.
