Belmont Village is designated as a Diabetes Center of Excellence through a specialized diabetes training program sponsored by Lifescan, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and Edgepark Medical Supplies. Diabetes care has always been a priority for Belmont Village. With a licensed nurse on-site 24/7 at every Belmont Village community, we can effectively and consistently monitor blood glucose levels, manage medications and administer sliding scale treatments. Our participation in the Lifescan program allows us to take that care to a higher level. Early detection and accurate monitoring are key, as are a healthy diet and lifestyle. Our Personal Assistance Liaisons (PALS) have been trained to recognize and report the signs and symptoms of diabetes to aid in early detection. And our nurses have received specialized training about the disease and preventive measures, making them valuable resources for residents and their families.

Diabetes cases in the United States have increased in recent years, and those most affected are the elderly. According to the Center for Disease Control, almost 25% of the population 60 years and older has diabetes, putting them at higher risk for serious complications. The 2007 National Diabetes Fact Sheet (the most recent year for which data is available) states that heart disease mortality rates are two to four times higher for adults with diabetes, compared to those without. The risk of stroke is equally high. Diabetics are also at a much higher risk for vision loss, kidney disease, and circulatory problems. Access to appropriate medical care becomes increasingly important with aging, especially when dealing with a chronic illness with potential for serious complications.
