A pretty picture, but cold weather, snow and ice combine to create some particularly hazardous threats for older adults. Slick outdoor surfaces make for treacherous passage, greatly increasing the chances of dangerous slips and falls. Additionally, as we age our bodies are less likely to compensate for changes in temperature, which can lead to hypothermia. Conditions such as neuropathy in the hands or feet make the warning signs of cold exposure hard to detect, increasing the risk of frostbite.
It’s important to check on elderly loved ones at least once a day. They’ll need a little more help with errands, outdoor activities, household chores, meals and medications.
