American Heroes: Portraits of Service

To proudly recognize the veterans who call Belmont Village home, we commissioned in 2008 the American Heroes exhibition for permanent display in our communities. These powerful portraits honor the military service of our veterans and acknowledge the extraordinary contributions they’ve made.

The Stories Behind the Uniforms

Captured by photographer Thomas Sanders, these portraits of resident veterans capture not only their time in uniform but the lives they built afterward. Each face reflects the courage and sacrifice of a generation whose service continues to resonate in our communities.

Public Tributes

Working with the Chicago Department of Aviation, Belmont Village and Thomas Sanders shared a curated exhibition of American Heroes in public galleries at the Midway and O’Hare International Airports, with dedicated sections for Chicago veterans. In 2025, an exhibit honoring senior Texas veterans was also created for Dallas Love Field. These projects pay tribute to the living history represented in Belmont communities.

The Last Good War

“A brilliant collaboration of historic stories told from a variety of American soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen who fought long and hard for the safety of their country.”
