Developed by Rice University’s Center for Community Learning and Engagement, Lifelong University delivers live and pre-recorded virtual coursework led by Rice faculty and other subject-matter experts, with Belmont Village teams facilitating in-person and online group participation. What began as a pandemic-era pilot has grown into a scalable model now offered across Belmont Village communities nationwide.

Shaped by resident input, courses span disciplines from Mayan civilizations and bird migration to medieval art history, lunar science and coral reef ecosystems. Instruction is detailed and expert-led—often by scholars with field experience—encouraging residents to explore subjects both familiar and entirely new.

Continued learning enhances intellectual vitality and reinforces a culture of engagement. Residents describe renewed curiosity, sharper thinking and a stronger sense of purpose through participation.
