Finding an appropriate residence for my mother has been an emotionally taxing journey. After looking at 15 facilities I found Belmont Village Sunnyvale. As soon as I walked in I felt it was a good fit. The Circle of Friends program was explained and I learned how it could help my mother and give structure to her day. I have joined Circle of Friends many times during visits. Watching the activities and observing the leaders in action is quite impressive. The caring and attention these individuals demonstrate is heart warming. They treat my mom like she is family. I realize how challenging it is to deal with memory impairment. The employees at Belmont Village do it professionally and with ease. I feel confident that Belmont can handle any issues that may arise with my mother. This brings me great comfort.

Knowing that you are there to take care of [my loved one] gives me peace of mind.
I am grateful for the steps that the management has taken to protect the Belmont residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, for the flow of information that you keep coming, and for the excellent personnel who provide care and food for the residents. I’m sure that it’s been a challenging task to keep residents in their apartments, get three meals and medications to them daily and still provide the personal assistance elderly residents need daily, at the same time.
I asked Mom the other day, are there a lot of absences among the staff? And she said, no, not as far as she could see; the same people that normally helped her were still coming to work every day. I thank each and everyone of you who make up the team that keeps coming to work in these difficult times and allows Belmont to be able to provide continuing great care for its residents.

Sunnyvale Belmont employees, I am so thankful in these times especially, that you are looking after my mom. I believe you started early to ensure the safety of residents and employees. My mom is healthy thanks to you. You are sooo appreciated. I think of all the challenges you are confronted with and still you are there cheerful and keeping healthy yourselves.

Speaker: Louise Aronson, MD, MFA
Dr. Aronson is a leading geriatrician, writer, educator, professor of medicine at UCSF and the author of the New York Times bestseller and Pulitzer Prize finalist “Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, and Reimagining Life.” A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Aronson has received the Gold Professorship in Humanism in Medicine, the California Homecare Physician of the Year award, and the American Geriatrics Society Clinician-Teacher of the Year award. Her writing credits include the New York Times, Atlantic, Washington Post, Discover, Vox, JAMA, Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine, and she has been featured on TODAY, CBS This Morning, NPR’s Fresh Air, Morning Edition, Politico, Kaiser Health News, Tech Nation and The New Yorker.
For decades, “old” has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet, at the very moment humans are living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease, a condition to be dreaded, disparaged, neglected, and denied. This presentation challenges not only the way we look at aging but also the way we think and feel about medicine and what it means to be a human being across the lifespan.
