‘Ready to get rowdy?’ Bay Area seniors celebrate Olympics with seated volleyball match

Seniors, who take their volleyball as seriously as anyone, were trying very hard to whack the ball where their opponents weren’t.

“You hit it between the chairs,” said Joyce Molyneaux, 93. “That’s how you win.”

Such is the strategy in all of volleyball, but especially the kind they play at an Albany assisted living home, where everyone plays from a comfy seated position and there is not a lot of lunging for the ball, most older folks having put their lunging days behind them.

Photos: Bay Area seniors compete in their own Olympic games

As the Tokyo Summer Olympics begins, some 30 senior athletes from Belmont Village Senior Living’s Albany, Sunnyvale and San Jose locations gathered in Albany to compete in a seated volleyball tournament and an amazing race relay.

The first Belmont Village Senior Living Olympics kicked off with a rousing opening ceremony as teams made their way into the town hall room to cheers and applause. Then athletes and spectators warmed up with yoga and stretching sessions before the start of competition.

The day was scheduled to wrap up with a medal ceremony and time for goodbyes.
