Martin Elkort worked in advertising art and photography. He studied fine arts at The Cooper Union School of Art and worked with individual photographers including Aaron Siskind, Paul Strand and Imogen Cunningham at the Photo League in New York City. “In 1948, I went to the Museum of Modern Art to meet with the curator of photography, Edward Steichen,” Elkort remembers. “He had turned me down two years earlier, telling me that there were 3 million photographers who wanted to be in the museum’s collection. But that day Steichen purchased 3 of my pictures for their permanent collection. I couldn’t feel the ground under my feet for three months.”
